Pocklington welcomes Yorkshire in Bloom judges Richard Hibbert and Rosemary Jeffcott
On Tuesday 15th July Richard Hibbert and Rosemary Jeffcott judges for the Yorkshire in Bloom competition visited Pocklington for the summer judging in the small town section of the competition. They arrived early in the afternoon on what was a splendid day. The sun was shining but there was a gentle breeze to keep the temperatures down.
Starting at Burnby Hall the judges were shown around the town by John Barber and Richard Wood from the 'Pocklington in Bloom' committee. Their first stop was at the display garden maintained by the Pocklington Women's Institute outside Burnby Hall where they met Barbara Vine. The judges then visited All Saints Church where they spoke to Ken Squirrell who showed them the display bed depicting the 65th Anniversary of the local W.I..
From there they visited the memorial gardens and walked through the Market Place where the weekly market was taking place. They then were shown the display outside the Post Office planted out in red, white and blue. The judges were shown the garden of Betterton Court by one of the residents, Ann Wilson. At Pocklington Community School they were shown the courtyard garden and the grounds by the new caretaker.
The judges then visited the allotments where they visited the winning plot. Both judges remarked on the high standard of this plot and added the allotments were the best they had visited this season. A stop was then made at Higgins hairdressers on Garths End who have entered the business section of the Yorkshire in Bloom competition. The judges were impressed by the planting under the signs particularly on the Sherbuttgate Estate. To end the visit the judges were given a well earned cup of coffee at Burnby Hall Gardens and had a look around the lakes where the water lillies are presently in full bloom. During the visit the judges presented the first prize in the front garden competiition to Margaret Thomas from Southfield Road and Gina Cambell from Dolman Tarrace,
Although the results will not be known until September the committee felt the judges saw the town at its best. Before leaving the judges thanked the committee for their organisation for the visit and said how much they had enjoyed their visit.
