On Tuesday 11th July Patricia Baker and Joseph Garner judges for the Yorkshire in Bloom competition visited Pocklington for the summer judging in the small town section of the competition.  They arrived early in the afternoon on what was a splendid day.  The sun was shining but there was a gentle breeze to keep the temperatures down.

Starting at Burnby Hall the judges were shown around the town by John Barber and Richard Wood from the 'Pocklington in Bloom' committee.  Their first stop was at the display garden maintained by the Pocklington Women's Institute outside Burnby Hall where they met Barbara Vine & Audrey Quarton.  The judges then visited All Saints Church where they spoke to Ken Squirrell who showed them the display bed depicting the 60th Anniversary of the Stewarts Bowling Club.

From there they visited the memorial gardens and walked through the Market Place where the weekly market was taking place.  They then were shown the display outside the Post Office depicting the 75th anniversary of guide dogs for the blind.  At Pocklington Community School they were shown the courtyard garden by four pupils.

The judges then visited the allotments and Higgins hairdressers who have entered the business section of the Yorkshire in Bloom competition.  The judges were impressed by the planting under the signs particularly on the Sherbuttgate Estate.  To end the visit the judges were taken around Burnby Hall Gardens by Ian Murphy the head gardener.

Although the results will not be known until September the committee felt the judges saw the town  at its best.  Before leaving the judges thanked the committee for their organisation for the visit and said how friendly everyone had been.
