Roof repair - Arts Centre
Oak House, Pocklington's Arts Centre and cinema, is currently undergoing some repairs to its roof which is proving quiet interesting. The contractors Scothern Construction from Malton are experienced in repairing old buildings which is fortunate because the Oak House dates back to 1782! Most of the roof had already been replaced but there was a small section in the middle which had not. Through the passage of time the wood had decayed making it essential that it was replaced. Interestingly it is thought the original timbers would not be new when fitted. It was the practice of the day to use the best timber for building boats and buildings would be constructed of second hand wood. In some places you can see where different joints had been made in the wood. Despite having scaffolding over the building it is still open as usual - the cinema and arts centre has not been affected. The work is due for completion in the middle of December. Below are views of the roof repair in progress.
