Pocklington's connection with HMS Volage

It may seem strange to us that a land-locked town like Pocklington should sponsor a sea-going destroyer, but this sort of relationship was encouraged by the authorities with the intenton of giving the civilian population a personal interest in what was going on in the theatres of war.  it was felt too that it would help sustain the morale of the men who were in the front line of the fighting.  People in Pocklington sent letters and gifts to the crew and they wrote back.  The association with Pocklington continues  with a new housing estate  being named 'Volage Court' in recognition of the links with HMS Volage.
