You may be aware that Pocklington has been chosen to take part in the Energy Saving Trust's Green Communities Scheme. The Gateway Partnership is leading on the section on Sustainable Transport and Tourism and we have a set up a sub-group with the same name.

Our part of the pledge is “to reduce car journeys by improving opportunities for walking, cycling and using public transport”.

A launch event for the Pocklington Green Communities project is planned for Saturday 23 January 2010 from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm

Walking

We have already started to work with Pocklington Town Council and the Pocklington branch of the Ramblers Association to work towards Walkers Are Welcome status for the town. This will involve publicising walks in the area, encouraging businesses to provide information about walks and keeping the network of paths in good order. If the status is achieved it will be positive publicity for the town and hopefully will attract walkers to visit.

Cycling

It is intended to promote cycling to both residents of the area and to visitors.

Possible activities include led cycle rides, cycle training for adults and families and road safety events.

Public Transport

The local bus forum is already working with the local authority and bus service providers to improve local services. Our group is looking at the possibility of attracting visitors to use buses.

How can you help?

• By attending the launch on 23 Jan and giving your ideas about how we can achieve our aims.
• By signing the petition to show support for Walkers are Welcome status.
• We need businesses who are willing to provide information and advice to visitors.
• We need practical helpers who are willing to help organise walks and cycle rides.
• We need help converting routes into maps in a format suitable for use on a website.
• We need individuals and groups who want to walk and cycle.

Walkers are Welcome petitions and Cycling questionnaires can be returned at the event on 23 January and you will be given a ticket for a free draw!
