Library update - October 2009
You will be aware that the council swapped the Railway Street premises for The Old Courthouse in June 2006 expecting work to commence shortly afterwards on a new library. Unfortunately due to the floods the following year, problems with getting a design we and the Civic Society were happy with and then difficulties caused through the culvert running under part of the site the work has been considerably delayed.
However the contracts have now been signed, builders are now on site and the old library building demolished. It was a great thrill to witness the demolition of the previous council office as it had been a drafty, mildew infested dour place to work.
Archaeologists are now on site doing an investigation before the foundations are put in. The town council have tried to get a better temporary library provision for the town and are presently exploring the possibility of the old ‘bargains4U’ shop being used. The Peoples Network computers are now operational at Francis Scaife Sports facility and a mobile library visits the Rugby Club site three half days a week.
