"Pocklington Chrysanthemum Society have been organising the town's autumn horticultural show since the 1940's - the show on 7th November 2009 was their 62nd. After the austerity of the war years came a desire to grow for beauty and pleasure rather than necessity and many local horticultural shows can trace their roots back to this post-war era.  Driffield Chrysanthemum Society, for example, celebated their 60th show in 2006. 'Hobby' flowers such as ours became very popular and membership of the National Chrysanthemum Society increased rapidly through the 1950's, reaching a peak of some 14,000 in 1967. Membership of Pocklingon Chrysanthemum Society is open to all local gardeners and costs just £10 per annum.
